We can improve, says Dunman's B Division basketball champs
Dunman rout opponents to reach zonal semis but guard Benedict warns against complacency
Dunman Secondary School point guard Benedict Ong chalked up a game-high 21 points, as his side trounced Chung Cheng High School (Main) 89-52 in their final Group X game of the East Zone B Division basketball championship yesterday.
Impressive in defence and offence throughout, the 17-year-old showed excellent agility and anticipation in stealing the ball to set up his teammates for easy lay-ups.
Despite the convincing win, Benedict - who also sunk three three-pointers - is refusing to rest on his laurels.
He told The New Paper after the game at Anglican High School: "Our offence is still okay, but there are some areas we can improve on, like shooting."
The reigning East Zone and National B Division champions were superior in all departments as they raced to a 16-point lead at half-time, but Benedict feels there is still work to be done in defence.
"We should get back on the defence faster," said Benedict, a Sec 5 student. "We didn't communicate when we were defending just now."
With four wins out of four, the Tampines-based school have reached the semi-finals, where they will meet Group Y runners-up Dunman High School on Thursday.
Dunman Secondary School teacher Danny Wong agreed that his side must defend better.
He said: "The offence was okay. We reached our target, which was 80 points. So, I thought our fast breaks and parameter shooting were acceptable."
Wong added that his team will be up for the challenge on Thursday.
"The boys are excited to be playing in the zonal semi-finals again, so we will prepare well," he said. "Up to this stage, every opponent will be tough.
"They do have their good points, but also certain weaknesses we can capitalise on, so we will be looking closely at the other teams when they play.
"We have a chance (to win the title), provided we keep our concentration."
The East Zone final is on March 3 at Anglican High School.
Subsequently, the top four teams from each of the four zones will contend for the national title later next month.
