Eight-year wait for team foil gold ends for women's fencers
The last time Singapore won the women’s team foil South-east Asia (SEA) Games gold medal was in 2007.
On Saturday (June 6), the fencers dispatched their Vietnamese opponents in style to end the arduous wait.
The team comprising individual foil gold medallist Wang Wenying, Cheryl Wong, Liane Wong and substitute Nicole Wong finished off their opponents 45-26 to bring
home Singapore’s second fencing gold medal of this Games.
Their triumph prevented a clean sweep in today's events at the OCBC Arena by Vietnam, who also clinched the gold medals in the men’s epee and sabre team categories.
It also took away some of the disappointment from the earlier men’s epee team final, in which Singapore narrowly lost to Vietnam by a single point.
Wang was extremely delighted to have finally won the team gold medal, after losing to the same country at the 2011 SEA Games.
“I’m very happy to have beaten them this time. We waited very long and trained very hard, and we did it,” she said.
Wang’s second gold medal at the Games would also be her last. The 34-year-old announced her plans to retire from the competition and pass the baton to her younger teammates, who are between 17 and 24 years old.
