He watched porn then tried to rape woman
After watching pornographic films, Marcus Yow Kai Wen, 18, tried to rape a woman at a block of flats near where she lived.
With a 15cm-long letter opener in one hand, he dragged his victim to a quiet block and told her to strip.
When he couldn't penetrate her, as she was wearing a tampon, he performed other sexual acts on her.
For attempted rape, he was jailed eight years on Monday (Aug 29) and ordered to be given 12 strokes of cane.
Two charges of sexual assault and another charge of attempted rape were taken into consideration.
Defence counsel Amarick Gill asked for the minimum sentence of eight years' jail and 12 strokes of cane while Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Sellakumaran urged Justice Choo Han Teck to sentence Yow to the higher end of the range.
This was because it was a premeditated offence and Yow has a history of attacking women.
In Dec 2014, he was put on 18 months' probation for using criminal force on four women, aged between 18 and 34, between March and May 2014.
In sentencing Yow on Monday, Justice Choo Han Teck said he would ordinarily have imposed the maximum sentence of 10 years and 12 strokes of cane on him.
Yow got the minimum sentence only because of his youth, said Justice Choo Han Teck.
The judge quickly added there was something wrong with Yow, and urged him to seek help.
