Dress for success, choose the right colours
You spent hours getting your hair done and burned a big hole in your pocket just to get your outfit right, but somehow your date doesn't seem impressed. What did you do wrong?
Maybe it's your choice of colour.
That's right. Something as simple as the colour of your shirt or dress can make or break your first date.
Different colours send different kinds of signals to the person you're trying to impress, so it's important to know which ones are a must-have and which ones you should never pick.
Of the 1,000 people — both male and female — that Buytshirtsonline.uk surveyed recently, 56% felt that black is the way to go if you want to exude confidence.
Red (41%) and blue (35%) came in second and third respectively.
So in other words, black is your safest bet if you want to feel good about yourself and show your dream man or woman that you're confident.
Red is known to be a sexy colour but it works best for the ladies. Of the female respondents, 54% indicated that they would dress in red if they wanted to feel sexy, while only 28% of the male respondents felt the same way.
Generally speaking, men don't see red as a sexy colour on themselves but feel that it works on their female counterparts.
Of the male respondents, 56% said that they like it when women wear red, which means that women should definitely pick red if they want their dates' undivided attention for the whole evening.
Guys, don't worry. You have an equal chance of impressing the ladies if you stick with black or choose to go with blue — 66% of the female respondents prefer men in black while 48% prefer men in blue.
The most arrogant colour
Surprise, surprise. The sexiest colour is also considered the most arrogant one.
It's best to be careful when wearing red clothes because they also put you at risk of giving off the wrong vibes. You wouldn't want people to start thinking that you're full of yourself do you?
Survey findings revealed that a big chunk of the respondents (28%) associated red with arrogance. Orange was the second most arrogant colour at 19% and yellow ranked third at 16%.
Brown (6%), blue (6%) and white (6%) were considered the least arrogant colours.
The trick here is balancing between being sexy and cocky. You'll definitely require some confidence on your first date but be careful not to be overly confident.
If you're going for a job interview or meeting a client, it may be wiser to choose a different colour just to be safe. After all, these appointments don't require you to be sexy.
The most unintelligent colour
You might want to stay away from pink if you're heading to school or meeting someone who's very smart.
Only a mere 5% of those surveyed associated pink with intelligence. Together with yellow (8%) and orange (6%), the three colours formed the bottom three in the intelligent colours category.
That's not to say you have to toss out any pink, yellow or orange outfits that you have. Just reserve them for less intellectual occassions.
To feel smart, go with black (45%), blue (35%) or white (27%), the three most intelligent colours according to respondents.
The most unloved colour
Earlier, we mentioned that brown was considered the second least confident colour, but the survey also discovered that it's the colour many people opt to stay away from.
The survey found that only 1% of women and 4% of men would show up for a first date in a brown outfit.
Orange was the second most unloved colour, with 2% of women and 6% of men saying that it was an appropriate choice of colour for a first date.
Do yourself a favour and avoid these two colours unless you want a disatrous first date. Pick black if you're unsure, it was concluded that you can't go wrong with it.
