School of frock: Stylists on vacation
Hollywood's best stylists must have gone on vacation because this week's fashion was a big bag of meh.
ROONEY MARA
Carol premiere at the New York Film Festival in New York City
Dress: Chanel
Shoes: Givenchy
B+
We all know she can’t live without her LBDs, but at least this sparkly textured piece isn’t putting me to sleep. If anyone can make weird proportions work, it’s audreybot (she looks like an audrey hepburn robot).

ELIZABETH BANKS
The Hammer Museum Gala in Los Angeles
Top, skirt and clutch: Bottega Veneta
It’s rare to see Banks dial down the drama. Still, it takes a style maven like her to make the combination of a nun’s habit and a cargo skirt not look like the dumbest idea on earth, but almost like a normal ladies-wholunch uniform.

JESSICA CHASTAIN
Crimson Peak premiere in New York City
Gown: Lanvin
Putting a redhead in green works every time. Straps that belong on overalls, however, don’t.
C
OLIVIA WILDE
Meadowland premiere in New York City
Gown: Rosie Assoulin
Shoes: Paul Andrew
Dressing like a human poinsettia will rarely get you the top spot. this craft-y, poorly tailored silk cut-out halter gown is an outright Project Runway challenge fail. It also pains me that the shoes are a clashing shade of red.

CATE BLANCHETT
Carol photocall in London
Jacket and jumpsuit: Givenchy
It has been one disappointment after another on her Carol promo tour, with this being the absolute worst and laziest example. Blanchett appears to have been on a week-long bender and just rolled out of bed in her pyjamas and threw a blazer on. She’s so out of it, she doesn’t realise her belt ties are undone and dragging on the ground. Just go home already.

SALMA HAYEK
The Hammer Museum Gala in Los Angeles
Dress: Bottega Veneta
I’m pretty certain a lot of effort went into making her look this bad. It’s such a stinker, I don’t even know how to describe it. the only appropriate response is to cringe, turn the page and pretend it never happened.
LEFT: JACQUI AINSLEY The Man From U.N.C.L.E. premiere in New York City, Aug 10 RIGHT: ROSIE HUNTINGTONWHITELEY Variety’s Power of Women Luncheon in Los Angeles, Oct 9
WHO WORE IT BETTER?
This black off-shoulder Stella McCartney gown isn’t the most scintillating thing around. It’s so understated, you’ll forget about it in a second. With her posing and styling, at least ainsley — also known as director Guy Ritchie’s baby mama — gives it an oomph that’s sorely lacking from huntington-Whiteley, who’s merely resting on pretty.
Left: Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, Sept 20
Top and pants: Christian Dior
Right: The Hammer Museum Gala in Los Angeles, Oct 10
Dress: Bottega Veneta
MOST IMPROVED
KIERNAN SHIPKA
The usually stylish Mad Men teen starlet hurt her cred at the Emmys, thanks to the awkward juxtaposition of a pastel embroidered baroque poufy top with modern cigarette pants. also, that shade of yellow surely is nobody’s friend. fortunately, she returned to form in a cute blue and black polka-dot strapless frock. If this is her way of saying sorry, you’re forgiven, sweetie.
SPECIAL MAN-TION
TOM HIDDLESTON
Crimson Peak premiere in New York City
Suit: Not known
Yep, that’s the sound of my ovaries exploding. hiddles is the handsomest of them all this week, as per usual. the man can really wear the hell out of a classic navy suit.
